ASTM Chairman and Staff Visit Widener University Engineering Students
On 21 March 2007 Dr. Tony Fiorato was joined by ASTM International staff manager
Kevin Shanahan for an educational event to engineering students at Widener University
in Chester, PA.

Tony Fiorato, the 2006 Chairman of ASTM’s Board of Directors and current President and CEO of CTL Group in Skokie, IL, presented information on standards and the construction industry to 56 undergraduate engineering students. The students were predominantly freshmen and sophomores from the Civil Engineering Structures and Materials Lab.

Tony spent time explaining the impact of standards on real world applications. He explained how standards are best practices and reflect a standard of care for professional engineers. There was discussion of standards C42/C42M Standard Test Method for Obtaining and Testing Drilled Cores and Sawed Beams of Concrete and C143/C143M Standard Test Method for Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete as it related to the students’ lab work. Tony is an active member of ASTM Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.

“We, as educators, look forward to the opportunity to expose our students to the pertinent standards and organizations that will influence how they practice engineering once they graduate,” stated Dr. Vicki Brown, Associate Professor and Chairman of Civil Engineering at Widener University, who hosted the event.
